In addition, Ahold companies use backhauling, in which goods from a supplier are picked up on a truck's return trip to a distribution center, thereby reducing the number of empty kilometers driven. That means that 95% of Giant-Carlisle's trucks are filled on return trips to the distribution center with products on board.
