A long tradition
Fighting hunger is part of Ahold's commitment to community engagement, particularly in the United States, and with some programs stretching back as much as 30 years, it's also a long tradition.
The numbers give a sense of the scale of those efforts:- In 2007, Giant-Carlisle distributed over 31.3 million in cash and food to regional food banks through its Giant Bags Hunger campaign, hams and turkey donations around the holiday season, and daily donations of bakery items.
- Stop & Shop's Food for Friends raises over 3700,000 annually and donates 20,000 frozen turkeys to families in need.
- Giant-Landover's summer Checkout Hunger program raises €150,000 each year. Its Good Neighbor Food and Funds Drive aims to raise €200,000 and 70,000 kilograms of food.
- Giant-Carlisle and Stop & Shop/ Giant-Landover give thousands of cans of food each year to "Canstruction", which uses them to build giant sculptures to attract attention for hunger initiatives and then donates the cans to local food banks.
