Partners in power
In August 2007, Stop & Shop and energy solutions developer EnerNOC, Inc. sealed a partnership for a program to help reduce stress on the electric power grid during high peak demand. Under the program, when the grid operator reports a peak in electricity demand, EnerNOC can remotely monitor and control dozens of Stop & Shop sites, reducing power consumption to help prevent blackouts. Stop & Shop alone can contribute enough "negawatts" - a term that is defined as energy that is conserved rather than consumed - to keep the lights on in more than 40,000 typical households.
